The Chandler High School quarterback is one of the top signal callers in the 2027 recruiting class, and his junior season backed up the hype. Mencl completed 70 percent of his passes for 3,815 yards and 33 touchdowns, and he was just as dangerous with his legs—741 rushing yards and 17 additional scores. For a player who didn't start his first game at quarterback until eighth grade, the trajectory has been steep.

Mencl points to mental development, not physical growth, as the engine behind his breakout. He spent lunch periods studying film with his coach throughout the season, building the kind of football IQ that he says defines his game. "I'm not the biggest, fastest, or tallest," he said. "It's a chess match. I love to read defenses and study. I'm going to make the right decisions."

That cerebral approach is part of why Oregon remains the right fit. Mencl committed to the Ducks with the NFL as his north star, citing the program's coaching staff and its track record of developing first-round picks as reasons Eugene is the best place to reach that goal. He still has unfinished business at Chandler, but the destination has been set for a long time—and the path is coming into focus.
