Back-to-back state championships are rare in Texas high school football, where a six-round playoff gauntlet can derail even the most talented programs. Smithson Valley High School in the San Antonio area had never won a state title before 2024 — then won two in a row, with Ty Knutson at the center of the second.

Knutson was a backup when the Rangers broke through for their first championship. In his first season as the starter, he guided Smithson Valley to a 15-1 record and a second consecutive title, throwing for 2,600 yards and 29 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions. That kind of efficiency in a debut season speaks to the poise he credits as a cornerstone of his game.

His path to the starting role was shaped in part by his father, Todd, who played college football at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Ty has been around the game since fourth grade, and that foundation has only deepened his commitment as the stakes have grown higher.

Knutson has committed to the University of Texas, citing the Longhorns' coaching staff — led by head coach Steve Sarkisian — as the program that showed the most consistent interest, attending his games in person throughout his junior season. He'll make the roughly 90-minute drive from San Antonio to Austin after his senior year.

First, though, there's unfinished business in the San Antonio area. With two championship rings already, Knutson is chasing a three-peat — something Smithson Valley has never done — before closing out one of the more decorated careers in Rangers history.
