Lawrence North High School has a history of producing elite talent — the Indianapolis program was the first stop on Sports Stars of Tomorrow's very first episode back in 2005, when Greg Oden was the number one basketball player in the country. Now the Wildcats have a blue-chip prospect making noise on the football field. Monshun Sales is rated the top wide receiver in the 2027 recruiting class, and his impact on the Lawrence North program goes well beyond the stat sheet.
Sales grew up near Birmingham, Alabama, watching his older brother Terius play and falling in love with the game early. Football became more than a pastime. "At home we didn't have much," he said. "Be bored at home or go play sports — that's what I chose." By the time he was six years old, he had already set his sights on the NFL. When he and his mother relocated to the Indianapolis area as COVID shutdowns were lifting, head coach Patrick Mallory spotted him in a youth league and made it his business to get to know the family. Sales chose Lawrence North, and the fit has only grown stronger over four years.
What separates Sales from other highly recruited receivers is his versatility and his mindset. He lines up on offense, defense, and special teams, and his coaches describe him as someone who can single-handedly erase mistakes and change the momentum of a game. "He can erase things from defense and put points up on offense," Mallory said. His quarterback echoed that sentiment, calling Sales an automatic green light in one-on-one coverage. But the trait coaches emphasize most is coachability. "He's allowed us to teach him, and just multiply it," Mallory said. Sales himself puts it plainly: "If you can't listen, you can't learn."
Growing up an Alabama fan, Indiana was never on Sales's radar — until Curt Cignetti arrived and built the Hoosiers into a national championship program. Sales committed to Cignetti and Indiana, blocking out outside noise and trusting what he saw developing in Bloomington. This past spring, the Lawrence North team received an invitation to Lucas Oil Stadium to participate in a mock NFL Combine, where players ran the 40-yard dash on the same field used by NFL prospects. For Sales, it was a preview of where his trajectory could lead. "Nobody really gets to experience that in their lifetime," he said. His goal, stated without hesitation: "I want to be the best ever. That's my goal. Not settling for nothing less."
