Mark Matthews: The 6'6" 300-Pound OL Prospect Dominating the 2027 Class

Fort Lauderdale's St. Thomas Aquinas has produced Pro Football Hall of Famers and NFL All-Pros, and the program's latest standout arrived on campus planning to play basketball. Mark Matthews, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound offensive lineman, is now ranked by many as the top offensive line prospect in the entire 2027 recruiting class — a remarkable rise for someone who didn't play organized football until his freshman year of high school.

Matthews came to Aquinas drawn by its basketball program, but the football coaches saw something they couldn't ignore. He moved up to varsity as a freshman, learning the game by watching older teammates on a state championship squad. What he absorbed went beyond technique. The Raiders' culture — what players and coaches call "the standard" — shaped how he approaches every snap. "We have a sense of not giving up, keep fighting," Matthews said. "We win around here. We're gonna dig it out."

On the field, Matthews is a physically dominant presence who takes the responsibility of the offensive line personally. "Nothing happens if we don't set the tone," he said. "I personally believe we hold a lot of responsibility if we don't do our job." His athleticism sets him apart at the position — he's quick enough to give pass rushers second thoughts and physical enough to finish blocks the way he likes best: putting opponents on their backs.

Matthews is committed to Texas A&M, where he believes head coach Mike Elko and his staff are building something significant in the SEC. He's clear-eyed about where he stands. "That ranking is a blessing," he said, "but I'm still not the best. I want to be starting in the SEC, in the NFL. I'm nowhere near that yet." The long-term goal is the NFL and, eventually, becoming a household name — a tradition St. Thomas Aquinas knows well, with alumni that include Nick and Joey Bosa and Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin.
