Sophee Peterson: No. 1 Recruit, Gatorade NPOY & Texas A&M Commit | Byron Nelson Volleyball
Byron Nelson volleyball has built one of the most decorated programs in the country—three state titles, two national championships, and a 79-match winning streak that stretched from 2024 into the current season. At the center of that run is setter Sophee Peterson, the No. 1 ranked recruit in the 2027 class according to PrepVolleyball.com and the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year as a junior.
Peterson's position is often compared to a quarterback in football or a pass-first point guard in basketball—a player whose value shows up not in the stat sheet but in how she elevates everyone around her. Her coach puts it plainly: she functions as an assistant coach on the floor, reading defenses, calling plays, and making decisions in real time. "She's the best one out there, for sure," her coach said. Peterson herself embraces the role. "I get to create for others," she said. "I love when my hitter gets a huge kill. I'm a giver."
The Gatorade national award caught Peterson off guard. She had already won the Texas state honor and thought that was the ceiling—until the Gatorade team showed up at her school to deliver the national recognition in person. Her coach, however, was not surprised. "She is the best player in the nation. I see it every day," he said. "She's a gym rat, and it shows in her play."
Peterson has also competed on the international stage, most recently winning gold with the U-23 USA National Team in Nicaragua. She credits those high-level environments with pushing her toward perfectionism. Next fall, she takes her game to College Station, where she will play for Texas A&M—a decision she said was easy once she built strong relationships with the coaching staff.
Before that chapter begins, Peterson has unfinished business at Byron Nelson. She is chasing a three-peat state title and is equally focused on what she leaves behind. Her younger sister Saydee is now on the roster, and another legacy setter—a younger sister of a teammate—is also coming up through the program. Both have had a front-row seat to Peterson's preparation and work ethic. "I want her to fill in right where I leave off," Peterson said of Sadie. "She's going to be great."
