Marissa Jones | Five-Star Volleyball Prospect, Ohio State Commit | Atlanta, GA

Out of Atlanta, one of the most complete prospects in the 2027 class is making her case not just as an elite volleyball player, but as one of the more well-rounded young athletes in the country. Marissa Jones, a 6-foot-2 setter at Woodward Academy, ranks among the top recruits in the nation for her class and has committed to Ohio State — but the numbers and the commitment only begin to tell her story.

Jones came to volleyball later than most elite prospects, having spent her early years cycling through soccer, tennis, swimming, and other sports. That multi-sport background shaped her volleyball IQ in ways that are difficult to teach. She studied old Olympic footage and NBA film with her father to understand how the greats built their games, applying that same analytical approach to her development as a setter. Her coach first noticed her in sixth grade and knew immediately she was different — fast, with great hands and an understanding of the game that far exceeded her age.

The setter position, as her coach describes it, is the quarterback of a volleyball team — reading the defense, distributing the ball, and putting hitters in the best possible position. Jones has embraced that role fully, describing herself as anything but a traditional setter. She wants to be flashy, aggressive, and constantly evolving. Last season, she helped lead Woodward Academy to a state championship, and she has her sights set on another title before heading to Columbus.

Her ambitions extend well beyond the college level. Jones has already won a gold medal with the U19 national team, and she has a long-term goal of representing Team USA. Her coach believes an Olympic appearance is a realistic possibility if she continues on her current trajectory.

Away from volleyball, Jones carries a 4.0 GPA, holds a black belt in karate, and competes on Woodward's track and field team — where her track coach noted she could realistically compete at the college level in that sport as well. She is also a serious visual artist whose abstract work has been displayed at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a distinction she traces back to summers spent at a camp hosted by the Art Institute of Chicago. Drawing and painting serve as a mental reset between training sessions and competition.

Jones has also been a Girl Scout for 12 years, earning service medals for volunteer work at local nursing homes and continuing to work toward the organization's Gold Award. The combination of athletic excellence, academic discipline, artistic talent, and community commitment reflects a focus and consistency that those around her say has defined her since she was a child.
