Kasi Currie: Sierra Canyon's Two-Way Force and Texas Longhorns Commit
Sierra Canyon is best known nationally for its basketball program, but out of Chatsworth in the northwest corner of Los Angeles, the Trailblazers' football program has quietly built a résumé that includes six CIF championships and two state titles—all in just 19 years of existence. The next chapter of that story runs through the defensive line, and no one on that unit carries more weight—literally and figuratively—than 2026 Texas commit Kasi Currie.
Currie checks in at 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, but what separates him from other prospects his size is what he can do with that frame. He has the leaping ability to dunk a basketball, the explosiveness to win off the snap against offensive linemen, and the football IQ to be effective both stopping the run and rushing the passer—a combination that most defensive linemen at any level struggle to master. His coach describes him simply as "an unblockable force."
That versatility was put to the test last season when Sierra Canyon's offensive line was decimated by injuries. Head coach Ellinghouse turned to Currie and asked him to play both ways. There was no hesitation. Currie lined up at offensive tackle, held his own well enough to draw recruiting interest from programs across the country for his work on that side of the ball, and helped the Trailblazers keep winning. He has since made clear that his future is on defense—but the willingness to do whatever the team needed says as much about his character as his athleticism.
Currie committed to the University of Texas, where he projects as an immediate contributor on the defensive line. Coach Ellinghouse doesn't hand out projections lightly, but he's said plainly that Currie has the ability to be a first-round NFL draft pick if he continues to develop. At 17, with his best football still ahead of him, that ceiling doesn't feel like an overstatement.
