Jayne Kennedy Overton: Trailblazing Pioneer of The NFL Today

February 6, 2026
Jayne Kennedy Overton was the first Black woman on The NFL Today in 1978, a pioneer now featured in the National Museum of African-American History.

In 1978, Jayne Kennedy Overton walked onto the set of The NFL Today and made history. She was the first Black woman to appear on the iconic pre-game show.

The path wasn't easy. She faced racial and gender discrimination in a male-dominated industry. But she persisted—from Miss Ohio to national television to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, where her contributions are now preserved.

In her memoir, Plain Jayne, she reflects on the importance of representation and the pride she carries as a pioneer for her community and family.
