Elena Vera | Vacaville Soccer Star Commits to Wake Forest | She's Next

October 20, 2026
Vacaville's Elena Vera earned U.S. and Mexican Youth National Team call-ups and is headed to Wake Forest to compete in the ACC.

Growing up in Vacaville, California — a city roughly halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento — Elena Vera dreamed of one day wearing a national team crest. That moment came when her coach called to tell her she had been selected for the U.S. U15 camp, a memory she describes as surreal. She has since gone on to represent the U.S. at the U17 level as well.

Vera's national team story doesn't stop at the U.S. border. Of Mexican-American heritage, she has also trained with the Mexican Youth National Team — an opportunity she views as a way to honor her family and her roots on both sides.

On the club level, Vera makes the regular drive from Vacaville to San Jose to train with the Bay Area Surf, one of Northern California's competitive club programs. Whether deployed as a midfielder or a defender, her defining trait is a relentless competitive engine. She credits that mentality — competing hard regardless of the score or who's in the stands — as the foundation of her development.

Next fall, Vera will take that mentality across the country to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she will play for Wake Forest University in the ACC. She has spoken about the program feeling like home from the moment she visited, and she's eager to test herself in one of college soccer's most competitive conferences.
