Question of the Day: Super Bowl MVP from the Losing Team

January 25, 2019
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley remains the only Super Bowl MVP from a losing team, earning the honor in Super Bowl V.

Super Bowl V ended with the Baltimore Colts celebrating, but the MVP trophy went to a Dallas Cowboy. Linebacker Chuck Howley forced two fumbles and intercepted two passes in a losing effort, performing so well that voters couldn't ignore him despite the final score.

No player has matched that distinction since. Howley got his championship ring the following year when Dallas won Super Bowl VI, but his 1971 MVP remains a singular achievement in NFL history.
