D.J. Steward developed into one of the nation's top scoring guards while playing at Whitney Young High School in Chicago. Originally a football player, Steward shifted his focus to basketball after an injury during a YMCA league game ignited his passion for the sport.

After earning Greater Catholic League Player of the Year honors at Fenwick High School as a sophomore, Steward transferred to Whitney Young, known for both its academic excellence and athletic success. Under head coach Tyrone Slaughter, Steward refined his game and earned a scholarship to Duke.
