Question of the Day: The Michigan Wolverines in the 1997 National Championship
August 28, 2023
The 1997 college football season ended with Michigan and Nebraska sharing the national title.
Michigan finished 12-0 after beating Washington State in the Rose Bowl, claiming the AP Poll championship. Nebraska, also undefeated, defeated Tennessee in the Orange Bowl and took the Coaches' Poll title.
The split remains one of college football's most debated outcomes. Both teams had legitimate claims to being the best in the country, highlighting the limitations of the poll system that existed before the BCS and College Football Playoff era.
